My experience with ADHD and Dyslexia

Back in Pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade, I did not know why I was doing so bad. I would misbehave, get in trouble, and wouldn’t learn. I would get made fun of for always having the lowest score in the class, until halfway through the year my first grade teacher helped me out. With her help, I got diagnosed with both ADHD and Dyslexia and from there, I got the help I needed to be able to succeed. I went to different tutoring sessions and started learning from some specialists. With their help, I went from being the dumbest kid in the class to one of the top students in the class, and becoming a straight A student.

What I wish my teachers knew

Before I got the help I needed, and even sometimes afterward, teachers would ask me questions in front of the class. Sometimes I had zoned out or didn't fully understand the question, and they would tell me to “pay attention” or get frustrated when I didn't know the answer. What I wish they understood is that it wasn't because I wasn't trying. In fact, I often felt like I was trying harder than everyone else just to keep up. Sometimes, no matter how hard I focus, it's difficult to catch up or get it right if there's no instructions for me to reference.\n\n\n\n\n\n
